Top Economist Steve Moore Warns: Nations Fighting Trump’s 50% Tariffs Are Making a ‘Huge Mistake’

Trade tensions continue to heat up between the United States and its neighbors. Indeed, President Donald Trump has taken decisive action in response to what he sees as unfair trade practices by other nations.

The conflict escalated this week when Ontario, Canada, imposed a 25% tariff on electricity entering America. Trump quickly responded by announcing he would double previously announced tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.

These growing trade conflicts have raised questions about potential economic impacts on both sides of the border. But let’s be honest – only one side has been getting the raw deal for decades.

The Tariff Showdown

Renowned economist Steve Moore issued a stark warning Tuesday that countries challenging President Trump on tariffs are making a critical error in judgment. During an appearance on The Faulkner Focus, Moore didn’t mince words about the situation.

“I’m not the hugest fan of these tariffs but I’ll tell you, I think that these other countries, Harris, like Mexico and China and Canada, are making a big mistake — a huge mistake — in thinking that they can win a kind of tit for tat game on this,” he said.

In response to Canada’s actions, Trump announced on Truth Social that he had instructed the Commerce Department to double the previously announced 25% tariff on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%. Effective immediately.

Trump also highlighted that Canada currently imposes tariffs of 250% to 390% on numerous American dairy products. When was the last time you heard the mainstream media report on that outrageous fact? He warned that if Canada doesn’t agree to his terms, he will implement additional tariffs on cars beginning April 2.

Moore explained that the current trade landscape is already tilted against American interests.

“All of these countries have higher tariffs than we do,” he stated. “So all Trump is talking about, Harris, is leveling the playing field so we have a fair playing field for American products.”

Why Other Nations Will Yield

The economic reality, according to Moore, is that continuing to fight against Trump’s tariff strategy will ultimately harm these other nations more than it will hurt America.

“Because Trump will not relent here and all they’re doing is ruining their own economy,” Moore told host Harris Faulkner.

This assessment suggests that Canada, Mexico, and other nations will eventually be forced to reconsider their approach.

European nations were also called out by Moore for their protectionist policies.

“The Europeans have three times higher tariffs than we do, Harris,” he noted.

Yet somehow America is painted as the villain when we finally stand up for ourselves? Give me a break.

Trump has already shown flexibility where cooperation exists. The president announced he would postpone tariffs on Mexican imports for around a month following productive discussions with Mexico’s leader.

America’s Winning Strategy

Moore expressed complete confidence in the president’s approach to these trade negotiations.

“At the end of the day, Harris, what I’m going to predict is that Trump will prevail here ’cause he’s a winner,” he said. “I would never bet against Donald Trump.”

“And I believe what’s going to happen is these other countries are going to be forced to lower their tariffs and [at] the end of the day, I actually think we’ll have freer, but fairer trade,” Moore concluded.

For American workers and businesses that have long faced uneven trade conditions, this strong stance represents a potential turning point in international commerce. The message from the Trump administration is clear: reciprocity and fairness will be the new standard in trade relationships.

I can’t help but wonder why previous administrations allowed American businesses to be pushed around for so long. Isn’t it refreshing to finally have leadership that puts America first?
